The Farm

Background

Our client found this grade 2 listed property in need of a sympathetic restoration, making use of the many outbuildings that already existed.

The Challenge

The brief was to create a family friendly home that could be used for weekends or continuous occupation, easy to maintain. As a listed property we had to work with what was there on site, retaining as many of the original features as possible & not damaging any of the original structure.

The requirement was to use technology was to make the home simple to operate delivering easy control & energy efficiency with the minimum of user interference.

The Solution

The entire house was re-wired & re-lit and a Lutron Homeworks control system installed along with Heatmiser heating control.

The core of the home is now the original barn, converted into a kitchen, family room & living space, opening on to a private courtyard.

Lighting is directed upwards using LED strip above the rafters and bronze John Cullen Minos spotlights mounted onto the beams shining into the ceiling. These are augmented with industrial pendants over the kitchen worktop and a large wrought iron chandelier over the family table.

Each room has one or more Lutron keypads to control the lighting, all the heating controls are hidden from view with concealed temperature sensors in each key location.

As part of the refurbishment the heating was run from a ground source heat pump with underfloor heating downstairs and radiators upstairs.
The entire installation is controlled using Heatmiser which gives individual temperature control in each room with the minimum of user intervention.

The Results

The lighting in all the principal rooms is controlled from the Lutron Homeworks QS system.

The keypads in each room call lighting “scenes” which set the lights exactly as required for that room, for cooking, eating watching TV etc.

The external lighting operates automatically depending on time of day but can also be operated from several locations inside the house to suit the owner’s needs.

The client also controls the whole installation from a smart phone; this can be anywhere in the world so they can turn the heating on remotely and check that all is well at any time without being present.
